Search engine optimization (SEO), is usually taken as something that you do after the website design and development is over once. - this is not the right approach as there are a certain things that you have to do while developing a website, which will make sure that will be optimized for search engines.
One of the simplest ways you can make a website to optimise for important keywords while you're in the process of designing and developing a website, is to adopt a creative approach for navigation.
The most important part of search engine optimization is definitely an anchor text - this means the text which is linked. For example, if you hyperlink the text "home page" then anchor text is home page. Generally web designers think it is back links when the word anchor text is used. Anchor text is also appropriate for internal links.
For incoming links, one must try to use the right keywords with internal links, wherever it is appropriate and possible.
It is not suggested that you must go overboard and use all the right keywords into all your internal links – do not try to do something unusual but wherever it's natural and appropriate, try to use the keywords instead of only using the same old and standards anchor text of internal link.
For instance, instead of "contact us" if the name of your company is "XYZ Ruby" then try to use "contact XYZ Ruby" and instead of "home" you could use "XYZ Ruby - Home." Instead of "online shop" you could use "Ruby online shop" and so on.
For an example of how many people just use the standard anchor text for internal navigation, try searching Google for "about us" "home" "contact us" "click here" and you will see that most of websites follow the norm. So, to be creative with your internal linking is a smart thing to do when designing your website, and something that most of your competitors has never imagined.
One rule of course - as I said earlier, don't make this an extreme case - if you overload any section of your website, including internal links with appropriate keywords in an unusual way, it can react and might backfire- in terms of search engine optimization, but also in terms of customer and visitor experience.
